EF College Break: Machu Picchu

When I first learned that EF College Break was offering trips to Peru, I was beyond excited! I had already been to Europe and wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity of going to South America. Just thinking about the mystery of Machu Picchu and the thrill of seeing llamas and alpacas walk by you, sells the trip itself. Peru is a country full of history and cultural pride, which is a main part of traveling. I was fortunate enough to have some great experiences both in cuisine and excursions.

I was able to try alpaca burgers, guinea pig, and pudding made from purple corn. For me, excursions make a trip all the more worthwhile. I got to go horseback riding in Cusco and we saw the sun set over the Andes Mountains. We also went river rafting in Cusco and could just enjoy the beauty of the mountains surrounding us.

Our group was also lucky enough to see a parade where school groups performed dances in traditional Peruvian garments. In Lima, we took a boat ride of the coast and we had an option of jumping into the ocean and swimming with sea lions! How many people can check that off their bucket list? Sure the water was cold, but I would not have wanted to pass up that memory. Of course, the highlight of the trip was seeing Machu Picchu and wonder at its awe of being built on a mountain, hidden from the valley below. Even though I got all those "postcard" pictures, the pictures really can't even do justice to the natural wonder that is Machu Picchu. After our hikes, we just sat gazing at Machu Picchu for well over an hour. We were able to walk through the ruins and hike up the Sungate Trail which gave vantage points of the sun rising over Machu Picchu as well as a more aerial view looking down onto ruins and the mountains. The trip was well worth it and words can't even describe how amazing Peru was. My advice to anyone and everyone who has wanderlust, add Peru and Machu Picchu as one of your next destinations!
